Performance & Execution, Hardcore History, Short Yardage/Goalline Day

P

It’s a special day here at Rice Football — Short Yardage/Goalline day. That means tight OL splits, four-point stances, and banging in the trenches. We’re different than most college teams in these situations. Nobody does it quite like us.

  • Here’s a little taste of what today will look like:

That’s 22 players within 10 feet of the ball and seven offensive linemen on the field. Beautiful!

Dan Carlin host two podcasts, Common Sense with Dan Carlin and Hardcore History. Both are great, but I especially like the depth he goes into with the history podcast. In fact, sometimes he can go too deep — his six-part podcast about WWI, “Blueprint for Armegeddon,” lasts something like 18 hours. However, if you like history give some of the other episodes a shot first. I recommend starting with “Prophets of Doom” about the chaos of the Reformation in Munster, Germany. It’s much more interesting than you think.

  • Best thing I read/saw/heard this week:

I read an article in The Athletic about a day in the life of QB E.J. Manuel during Raiders training camp. This quote from the article resonated with our being in the middle of camp:

“Manuel said he has learned over the years that there are really only two things: Preparation and execution.

‘As long as you take care of those two things, everything falls into place,’ Manuel said. ‘That’s why I never get rattled by competition. I just know that I am doing my part.'”

Sound advice.

Have a great week!
